Communicating Student Learning (CSL)

 

Student reporting is the assessment and communication of student learning. Every student in B.C. receives communications from the school at different times in the school year, providing parents, caregivers, and students with information about student learning. The way teachers and schools communicate student learning and the format of traditional report cards is shifting. Changes to student reporting come into effect as of the 2023-24 school year. 

 

We believe in clear, timely, ongoing, and transparent communication between schools and families in support of student learning. Curriculum, assessment, and the communication of student learning are interconnected:

• Curriculum sets the learning standards that inform classroom instruction and assessment.
• Assessment involves the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to describe and evaluate students' progress toward meeting provincial learning standards.
• Communication of student learning supports students and their families in understanding the student as a learner:
  • their areas of strength
  • what needs further attention
  • the supports from which the student benefits
  • where the learning is going next with their learning

 

The Ministry of Education and Childcare (MoECC) has released an Information Package that provides a comprehensive overview of what you need to know about student reporting in B.C. Of course, your child's school will also provide specific information about how these provincial changes in student reporting will be implemented.
